Supporting Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome Families

Supporting Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome Families

Bringing your friends and family together through fundraising can be rewarding and really does contribute to helping those with Wolf Hirschhorn live a little easier.

There are many creative ways of fundraising through dress up days, themed picnics and barbeques, luncheons and much more. It’s as easy as registering your event with HKLN and getting started.

Here’s a look at some of the events held with Help Kids Like Nick since 2012.

Drinks on the Deck

Drinks on the Deck was a great evening for HKLN supporters recently. We were up high on the 33rd floor in the city overlooking the Brisbane River to Mt Coot-tha. With good company, food and wine we launched the new website for HKLN. Special thanks to Vincents for the function space, and to Keylee Somerville for photography. Fabulous raffle donors and supporters helped with fundraising of over $3000.

Yuleba Marathon & Fun Run 2017

The fourth Yuleba Marathon and Fun Run was held in April 2017. By this time we were getting the hang of it and it was the easiest and most fun we had as an organising committee which does matter in the scheme of things! Most importantly though close to $50,000 was raised in the process and all attending enjoyed the weekend.

Thanks to everyone who took part in the 2017 Yuleba Marathon and Fun Run!! It was a huge success and we would like to thank all the sponsors, supporters and volunteers.

Thanks to Will Officer and Brandon Saunders for the filming and editing of Yuleba Marathon and Fun Run 2017! Reminder of what an amazing weekend it was!!

Yuleba Marathon & Fun Run 2015

Help Kids Like Nick held its 3rd Fun Run in April 2015. So many stories to be told and new friends were made over the weekend. A novel afternoon attraction was the Pig Races which drew a large crowd.

Again raising money to support Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome families was the focus and thanks to loyal and new sponsors and volunteers the event raised over $45 000.

Yuleba Marathon & Fun Run 2014

The second fun run in April 2014 attracted over 240 runners and walkers and raised over $30,000. A new circular route on the Surat Road out of Yuleba introduced some hills and new course times. Many families camped at the venue of the Yuleba Golf Club with the children declaring it was the best weekend ever!

The generosity of major sponsors, donors and many others was the key to making this event a success.

Seven Senses Dinner – 2013

A Gala Dinner was held at Cloudland incorporating the theme The Seven Senses. This helped highlight the reality that a lot of our friends with WHS  live with the diminished use of, or with absent senses. It was a beautiful night with over $25,000 raised throughout the evening and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Yuleba Marathon & Fun Run 2013

The inaugural Fun Run was held in Yuleba, a tiny town in western Queensland, on the 27th April 2013. Multiple events including a marathon, half marathon, 10km and 5km races attracted 209 entrants.

This was HKLN’s first big fundraiser and we were ecstatic to raise close to $70,000. Thanks to everyone who worked to make this possible from the major race sponsors, to entrants and donors and the many many volunteers who came from near and far… it was hard work, we were all exhausted but so worth the effort!

Kokoda Trek by Stephen & Olivia Dykes

One of the early fundraisers held by loyal HKLN supporters Stephen and Olivia Dykes was their Kokoda Trek Challenge. Both father and daughter successfully completed the long 96km with a few blisters and tired bodies the legacy of their walk. They raised a mighty $16,887 in the process. This was the cashflow HKLN needed to help put the subsequent major fundraisers in motion with the end goal of supporting WHS families.  Thanks so much to the Dykes Family for your unwavering support.

Tree Frog Art Gallery 2012

In February 2012, Heather Gall held an Exhibition of Art Works at her Tree Frog Gallery in Maleny. This was such a fun event with $3680 raised for Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome families.

A concert was held within the Tree Frog Gallery space featuring Cadenza, a four piece acapella quartet singing classics and jazz. Renowned opera singer Louise Kennedy  and the beautiful Jane Magao, who sings like an angel, also entertained. A stunning Wearable Art Fashion Parade of ‘paper gowns’ by Robyn Woodrow completed the evening.

Special thanks to Heather and David Simpson for this evening and ongoing support.

St George Races 2012

Help Kids Like Nick was officially launched in 2012 at St. George in south west Qld, the home of Nick Blacket who has WHS and his family. A large breakfast at Riversands Winery with other racegoers was followed by a day at the St.George Races. It was a great day out with many new supporters helping to raise vital funds for Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome families in Australia.

Barefoot Bowls 2012

The very first ever HKLN fundraising event was held at the Hendra Bowls Club on the 26th August 2012. On a gloriously sunny day in Brisbane families came together  to have some fun at the HKLN Barefoot Bowls Day. $2,963 was raised and this event was the catalyst for creating relationships with families who have attended and supported every HKLN event that has since followed.

The Glennie School / Toowoomba Grammar Soccer Match

The Glennie School has been supporting WHS families through HKLN since 2013, when they held their first annual soccer day between Glennie and Toowoomba Grammar. It is with heartfelt thanks to both schools and the students who continue to support WHS families through us.

Other fundraisers

There have been so many other fundraising events organised by our loyal and supportive friends and supporters.  These include raffles, sausage sizzles, morning teas, fun runs plus many more.  These are often the unexpected donations which mean so much and help us give just a little bit more to our families with WHS.
